The group was founded in 1964 in the state of New Jersey, Jersey City.
The group includes James "J.T." Taylor (vocalist), Robert Bell (bassist), Ronald Bell (tenor saxophonist), George "Funky" Brown (percussion), Robert Mickens (trump), Dennis Thomas . The band debuted with longplay album 1969 under the title Kool and the Gang. The most successful songs of the band are Celebration (1980), Ladies Night (1979), Get Down on It (1982), Joanna (1984) and Fresh (1985).
